If you are asking whether "free mail" accounts should be banned, I think not.
There are too many anonymous email things out there, so all that happens is that
a troublemaker has some added fun trying to find one that we haven't thought of,
while those who are not troublemakers are inconvenienced.

If someone wants to cause trouble, they can just get an AOL account, which
provides you with more than one "screen name", as far as I know. We can't ban
AOL.

The bottom line is that if someone wants to pee in our pond, there's not a lot
that can be done about it before they start peeing.

This is being done.

This would be a waste of Tim's time. Anyone who wants to cause trouble can
evade any protection like this that you can design. Anyone who wants to get
banned can do it without using a single offensive term. Anyone who wants to can
create an image that's a lot grosser than you get from a cuss word or two,
without using any cuss words.

There are also many other languages than English, and use of these language is
not banned here.

I don't think that the occasional cuss word in a message body causes enough
trouble here that we need to care. People have been using vulgarity now and
then here since the place was founded.

I, for one, would not like to have the job of compiling a worldwide offensive
term list in order to use it to filter out posts that are otherwise perfectly
reasonable.

I think this place would be very sour if we implement a standard of puritanism.

See above.

See above.

If you are talking about censoring the archive, see above, but I'm not sure if
that is your question here. I think that online archives for anyone's access
are a good thing. Personally, I think that anyone should be able to *read* CCC
without signing up at all, including banned people.

The problem with this question is that it's like asking a cop what he/she thinks
should be done about the local fire service.

Regarding feature changes, a moderator is just like anyone else. They express
an idea to Tim/Steve, Tim/Steve decide whether they want to do it, and if so
Steve pays for it, and Tim does it.

So if for instance I think that a searchable archive is a good idea, my being a
moderator or not makes no difference. I can't decide it's going to happen, and
once it's decided that it's going to happen, I can't write the feature. If
someone who is not a moderator thinks up a feature, and tells Tim/Steve, and
they do the feature, there is a good chance that the first the moderators will
hear about it is a post from Tim, which is fine.

All moderators can do is delete posts, recommend deletion of accounts, and use a
little authority when writing posts and sending email.

I think CCC is fine the way it is. I like having a lot of posts. Most of them
aren't interesting to me, but I think that we have a healthy community here. I
wish people would use the general chess forum for general chess stuff, but that
hasn't taken off the way the computer side has, so I can see why people are
reluctant to use it.
