Mine seems to have a default of just one ply. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, or maybe others (CM owners) can tell us what there's is. I had to create a personality on my CM8K to set ss=6, and only then did it do any good as a solver. I can only assume a big ss is also good for playing, especially against a deep searcher like Fritz. I'm using the patch, but I don't think ss was a bug to be fixed in the original.
