The answers are pretty easy to explain, but actual performance is more
iffy.

1.  DSL uses a dedicated pair of copper wires from your home to your
local switching office.  So whatever bandwidth you can get (it varies
depending on how far you are from the local office) will be pretty
constant.

2.  Cable uses a shared coaxial cable, very much like the old "thickwire
ethernet' LAN connections we used 15 years ago.  This means you _share_
total bandwidth with your neighbors.  If they don't have a computer, or aren't
using the net, cable will fly.  If everybody gets on at once, it will drag.

Simple summary is that DSL is pretty constant in bandwidth, while cable will
only get slower as more people sign up and use it.
