To say that IBM stock went up because of Deep Blue is utterly ridiculous. I
checked this at the time. The stack ran up before the match as well as during
and after -- it's called a bull market. Everything was going up that whole
time. If I call correctly, it actually leveled off a little after the match --
the rate at which it had been increasing in value was higher before the match.

I remember looking at the chart and it was all tea leaves at best. There was
absolutely nothing to the idea that the stock went up because of Deep Blue.
There have been persistent rumors about the stock price, and they are all crap.

Stocks go up and down for lots of silly reasons. Someone may have bought some
because of the match. Big deal. It's not like the company is worth more *now*
because of this. Maybe someone could have made a dollar extra per share if they
had traded at the right time, but this is nothing permanent and nothing
significant.

What drives IBM's share price is its ability to meet increased revenue targets.
I can guarantee you that the degree to which the company exceeded or failed to
exceed expectations would have had way way more to do with the stock price than
anything that Deep Blue could have done.
