w    = white to move
KQkq = both white & black can still castle to king & queen side
a3 = the en passent square
77 = the number of plies since the last irreversible move, e.g. promo /
        capture / pawnmove
1    = the move counter

It has to be said however, that the above example should look like this:

rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1

The en passent field should only be given after a 2square pawnmove, otherwise it
should be "-". For the castling field, you just have to look whether white or
black can still castle, and in which way(s), then combine the letters as above,
and if no castling is possible use a "-".

K = white can still castle to king side
Q = white can still castle to queen side
k = black can still castle to king side
q = black can still castle to queen side

Paul
