I also read 'My System' and found it quite interesting. But my main influences come from Emmanual Lasker and Willhelm Steiniz. When reading these classical masters, Tarrasch, Alekhine and Reti comes to mind, you have to recognize the underlying economical and political motives. They where all trying to get invites to major tournaments and exebitions, as they where living in a time where a few strong chess masters actually died of starvation, malnutrition and diseases coming from poor living conditions. In short the books, although very good, where all self serving in a major way. And when I compared Nimsowitch's own games with 'My System' I found he did not take his own advice all that religiously. The last few years there have come some new masterpieces: Yermolinski 'The road to chess improvement', Baburin 'Winning pawn structures', Nunn 'Sercrets of Grandmaster chess'. Try at lest Baburins book. As for pushing/not pushing pawns, in this position there is a good reason to do so both prophylactic and restrictive and it is black who has the biggest hole in the position currently and white might be able to do some positional damage.
