I would recommend to stick to Windows 98 Second Edition.

I am running WinME on my developpement computer since several months now, and I
find it to be relatively stable for what I do. And I do all kind of stuffs
actually...

However by upgrading to ME I have lost a number of features:
* I cannot boot in pure DOS, unless I use a DOS boot diskette. Maybe this will
be a major annoyance to you if you want to run DOS chess programs.
* The OS does not support older hardware anymore. My intention was to install
the same OS on all my computers in my office, but I could not because it refused
to installed on some older computers (many older drivers have been removed from
the Windows installation CD).
* Some programs do not run anymore in WinME, because they do low level hardware
access. While this has been designed on purpose to increase the stability of the
system, I think it was simply better to wait for the NT system to get full
acceptance...
* my parallel port scanner does not work anymore with ME. Actually the parallel
I/O is not the problem, the problem is an updated DLL in the system which is
crashing. I had to move the scanner to another computer!

On the other hand, the number of real improvements in the system over W98SE is
quite small, and I cannot even remember a single example of anything significant
at this time.

So I would not say that WinME is a bad OS, but just that it is not worth the
trouble. Keep W98SE and you will be happy.
