Go up one level in this thread

I am just a dumbo smart enough to operate a PC and hit a key at my keyboard by
accident. I'm like the ten monkeys experiment trying to rewrite Shakespeare's
works albeit more successful....:)

But about Vincent......

He got stuck up in a thread which went a bit like this:
(V) "Please, what is the use of posting one random 15,0 game from a new chess
program (or at least a new version) and stating that the engine is impressive?"
(some others) "Vincent, you're just jealous".

Maybe his message was a bit too negative, because I suspect Feivel posted the
game because he just was delighted about his new toy (as we all are in case of
new toys:)), and (I think) Vincent thought "is this all CCC has to offer?"

I don't want to discredit Vincent or Feivel. I think Feivel has the right to
post his delight about GT2 in the way he did and I think Vincent has the right
to think out aloud "is this all CCC there is?". Neither of them should be
discredited for that.
And it seems Vincent gets all the "blame".

Let me explain.

You know I think this place is as much a market on the town square with all
people gathering, looking for all kinds of things computer chess related, and so
I disagree with Vincent about his possible intention - you know, if that was the
intention of his message.

This is also a fine place to share the enjoyment of a hobby.
Beside that - more people are bullied away because of supposed off topic
postings than because of chess programming questions. Have you ever seen the
latter happening?

But Vincent clearly expects something else from this board; however that doesn't
mean he is *jealous*. Sorry, but that assumption has no ground to stand on. So
his (hidden?) question has value. You can agree or disagree, but you can't
discard it with simple rhetorics.
(I even learned a new expression from the thread: "anger management"!!)

It's always a pleasure to see people busy with their hobby, but you know, on the
other hand, what if we all started to post random games won by chess engines
from other chess engine just to say you're happy with the new toy?
So maybe a bit of restriction *can* be in order. Not because of supposed
bandwidth, but because of the objective of this board - the interchange of
questions and opinions.
In that light even a full scale flame war consists more content than a random
chess game by a random (yet fine) chess program.....

I won't discredit Feivel's message, because we all know that if a new program
emerges, a lot of people start to post messages like "GAMBIT FRITZ KICKS
ASSES!!!!!!!!!!!!! (nt)" and "MY COPY JUST CAME IN 2 MINUTES AGO: REBEL JUNIOR
ON A K7-46372MHz W/256MB RAM ON A SLOT F ASUS 657FY4SH MB AND RD-RIMMRAMM IS
SIMPLY WOW!!!!!! (nt)"
After a few days these messages disappear, and the next program is there.

Maybe Vincent is wrong in his assessment of the situation here, but that doesn't
make him 'negative' or 'jealous'.

And about that other thing: in my opinion (commercial) chess engines are made
for humans. That they are used as slaves to play against each other is just
because we are their bosses. But you only get the maximal fun from chess by
playing yourself. Period.
Even against a 2500 rated chess program. Vincent proved that once again with HIS
game. :))

Power to the people!

J.
