A couple of aspects to this:

1) The copyright on software does not expire at the point the software comes off
the market. The copyright is held by the author and/or publishers. If you want
legal copies of the software, the "proper" thing to do is to ask them. If
someone else thinks that I am *legally* in error, please let me know.

2) I think that most of us understand what is copyrighted software. If someone
posts a link to a place where you can download Chess Genius (any version),
expect the post to get pulled. If a post is deleted by mistake, please feel
free to argue that the owner of the page has the legal right to offer the
software for download, and if we agree with you, you'll get an apology and be
allowed to repost.

Personally, I think that software piracy is wrong, and I don't do it. But
regardless of how I feel about it, I think I have a responsibility to Steve and
to ICD to discourage the posting of links to pirated software.

The moderators are not paid by Steve, but we are under his auspices to some
degree. If people post links to that stuff here, and we encourage it, and Steve
does nothing to stop us from encourage it, and CCC becomes the place to go to
find out about bootleg software, Steve might have some legal liability.

So please obey the law here, and do not encourage others to break it.
