X<=4 is a win if the board is small enough, that can be proven easily either by
search or by hand. x=5 i think is a win, 'The Danish Variatin' I think the
opening is named. But I might be wrong there. A handicap system was invented
(Russian opening) where the first move was made in the center, and after the
reply the next move had to be outside a 5x5 square centered on the starting
piece. x=6, I'm not sure if its proven but it should be possible. But anyways PN
search should come in handy, either as the main search or to safeguard a
brute-force search from playing loosing moves.
