Interesting posts, Graham and Albert. A good show of how differently people see his own abilities, weaknesses and his general handling of the game. In my case I did, lot a years ago, a decision that had awesome consecuences to this day. In order to avoid to defeat too many times that old computers that were around 1700 strenght I said to myself "I am not waste my inversion learning on heart the way to defeat these beasts nor I will improve my knowledge, but I will keep things as they are now to get the most of my money". So I invested in ignorance, to say it straight. What I wanted was not to get a winning game after the openning, but to get fun in the middle game on a base of fair chances for each side. Now is too late to learn. I am 52 years old and by now the waste of time and investment of it would be to study things in my books. So to this day my pleasure -somewhat weird, if you want- is to hold the game without knowing too much of oppenings. In fact I get a thrill when after move 5 I must begin to think and after a while my move is responded instantly, because then I think "I was capable of finding the best move according theory wiothout knowing nothing about it". Same with endings.... Of course the result is that I lose 7 or 8 games and the rest I scarcely draw with agonizing fight, but...what a pleasure! Sadomasoquism perhaps? And anyway, slowly, you learn something.... Fernando
