Let me just say that: 1. I agree that people should try to be friendly. A reminder from time to time to try to be friendly is a very good thing. 2. There is not much of a problem with personal attacks here.(In other words, I disagree that there is a huge problem that needs to be addressed). Perhaps, I really don't get it. If someone says (for instance) "You are wasting your time with this tournament." that is not a personal attack. I ran a tournament last year that took me 6 months to complete and had more than one thousand games included in it at long time controls. Some people told me I was wasting my time. Now, that is not correct. I might have been wasting *their* time, since they were not interested in the tournament, but I was not wasting my time, since I enjoyed the data that resulted. Now, I could have become offended when told I was wasting time. But I think that was simply an alternative opinion, and equally valid to mine. In fact, when someone says something like that, I should examine their opinion and consider if I really could spend the time in a more valuable way on other pursuits. Time is precious. We only have just so much of it, and we have families and lives and jobs and hobbies and many other pursuits. In other words, we all have viewpoints and viewpoints are neither right nor wrong. They are not like facts that have definite answers. Especially in the field of computer chess, viewpoints are far more frequent than cold hard facts. People have very differing views. That's not a bad thing -- it's a good one. It is a spur that drives us onward towards the facts. Being friendly at all costs means that we have to spend "all costs" which is a lot. Friendly is definitely a good idea. But we should not be afraid to disagree or think that we cannot say anything that might upset someone else. Sometimes, it is a good thing to get upset. It gives us a chance for personal reflection.
