My own personal opinion is that interest in it waned over the years.
The last one we had was at Cape May, the infamous tournament where
Deep Thought had to forfeit round 1 to mchess due to a power failure
at the Watson lab, but then they rolled everyone else up into a tiny
ball and won the event hands down anyway...

that tournament almost didn't happen until IBM kicked in money to put
it on, otherwise Indianapolis would have been the last.  I doubt there
will be another, unfortunately.  I attended them starting in 1976 (to
play, I attended the other 6 while at the acm conferences...  was always
a lot of fun to sit around and talk chess with the "legends" like Slate,
Thompson, Truscott, Schwartz, Marsland, Berliner, etc...
