Quite so, I assume some of it really is free.

We did a bunch of work with Cygwin, only to discover that it wasn't free at all,
which is why I mentioned that example.

I also am something of a "GPL virus" proponent, having read carefully the
language it contains [I realize the intent may be something altogether
different].

Be that as it may, I am sure that there is lots of quality software that really
is free.

I *am* a fan of Berkeley or ACE style copyrights which are [as far as I can see
(according to my current, limited understanding), for all intents and purposes]
-- actually free.
