I think *that* is what the original poster had in mind. I have no problems with Chessfun or KarinsDad posting quality material under their chess-names, the problem has been seans, johns, petes, and carls posting *low-quality* material and personal attacks. It soon becomes rather boring to recognize someones debating style, under *this* months alias. It is also tough for people actually named John, Pete, or Carl, because they risk beeing initially treated badly. Especially if they innocently post from a free mail account... So once in a while a new idea pops up on how to recognize a person for whom he really is. Hard to do in practise though. Earlier discussions have been about things like sending your birth certificate to the moderators, entirely banning free mail servers, and now displaying the posters IP-address. None of them good enough for various reasons. [...] > >You will never get a perfect forum where everyone behaves nicely. Of course >there is one way of doing it. The semi-paranoid tone here comes from past experiences, which forced us to move from the news group rec.games.chess.computer to this moderated forum. Those of us who have been here for a long time have since seen: - someone's mother and sister coming here to complain about the poor guy being locked out. - persons using multiple names arguing with "themselves" - people being locked out immediately re-registering under a new alias - newly registered member with a short, brittish, male name starting a new thread attacking other people or companies - someone registering a very large number of new aliases just before a moderator election -etc.....
