Frank, It's not clear that Shredder is the most obvious opponent unless you're certain about your assumptions. Example: 1) BGN wants a SMP program due to publicity reasons, ie. the "Kramnik vs. 8-cpu monster" match. The solution is then either: a) Choose among the existing programs (short term). b) Arrange a tournament for all SMP programs and maybe a couple of Grandmasters(long term). 2) The best program disregarding whether it is SMP capable or not. Rather unlikely since it's time consuming and involves numerous detail questions. Neither of the scenarios involve previous achievements in either official tournaments, basement tests or various lists IMO. So Shredder doesn't have any automatic priveleges. Option 1b is the best solution, but I assume they prefer 1a because it's quite easy to arrange. My feeling is that they'll end up flipping a coin over Deep Junior or Deep Fritz somewhere in the vicinity of Cadaques :-). That solution was very predictable from the start and has nothing to do with the intention of arranging a match between the best computer program and Kramnik. So the only option for Millennium is to comply to the terms mentioned on their website if they want a shot at Kramnik. I wouldn't waste my time on that arrangement if I were them. Mogens.
