Arranging a qualification round including all the best single cpu programs isn't a feasible solution. Neither when it comes to time or organisation. Consider the problem of hardware in particular. It is unlikely that several eight cpu machines would be available for the qualification rounds and choosing duals would fail to demonstrate the real hardware difference. Add organisation and chaos is inevitable. The challenger therefore has to be SMP capable. It would have the necessary publicity appeal to match Kramnik against some kind of electrical nightmare :-). Using a fast Athlon would seem rather unsatisfactory compared to recent man vs. machine encounters. After all, it's a challenge match, not another computer chess tournament. How should the program be selected then? I see two possibilities. Either Deep Shredder as the reigning World Computer Chess Champion or a qualification tournament between all interested SMP programs. The latter option could be timeconsuming given the number of participants, but not impossible IMO. I've mentioned a few possibilities in a previous post somewhere. The option of using is looking more and more promising as time goes by. Especially in light of the current invitational, which isn't a good solution as you mention yourself. The invited engines and the conditions of play gives the impression of being fixed, whether that is true or not. Two reasonable options exist, qualification or reigning champion. Regards, Mogens
