The first thing you have to have to survive is a strong book learning algorithm. Otherwise the best program in the world will get racked up and bagged. It is _much_ more difficult to play and win in a tournament than it is to play and win a match. Particularly if your book-learning algorithm works better than your opponent, or if your opponent doesn't even have one at all... Where in a tournament it doesn't help a bit...
