I still use alphabeta in endgames.
When I'm talking about a dedicated search algorithm, you can view it as
a serious change in the tuning of various things
* Selection
* Extensions
* Q-Search
From my experience, you can survive in middle game even if you are
outsearched in depth. It's much harder in the endgame. So you have to do
what you can do to see as deep as possible. By being more agressive in
the selection, or doing more extensions for example.
People using null move, and afraid of zugzwang problems, can be in
trouble there.
