If we would look at the new FIDE Rating, you would note that although Karpov holds the FIDE title, his elo rating is lower than Kasparov, Anand & Kramnik. Chess buffs are now rooting for a match-up between Anand & Kramnik but it seems nobody is biting it. About the loss of Anand to Karpov, we should consider that Anand experienced some mind zapping, gruesome matches before reaching the finals. When he faced a very fresh Karpov, we somehow predicted that Karpov will emerged victor . We are right, but Anand fought brilliantly . After the FIDE match, we can see that Karpov fared poorly (maybe due to exhaustion) in the next tourney while Anand / Kramnik has a better record.
