The problem with this Kramnik vs computer match is the way the program is being
selected, and what will naturally be said about the program that is selected,
and to whom this will be said.

I got some unsolicited spam this morning, from quote.com. I have no idea why I
got it, but it contained a Reuters article about the tournament. To quote:

"Twenty-four year-old Kramnik, a former pupil of Kasparov who beat his old
teacher in November last year, will face the best of a number of computers
currently playing against each other in Spain."

What is happening here is that we have a little world championship tournament
going on in Spain. The winner will be crowned best computer in the world, and
this will be expressed to everyone in various wire service stories. The public
will perceive that this is the best computer in the world.

I don't think that anyone should allow themselves to be called best computer in
the world. We assigned that title in Paderborn 1999. You were there, I was
there, and neither of us got that title. It's Stefan's title, and he should be
allowed to enjoy it until the next WCCC.

This Brain Games pseudo-title will be worth a lot of money, but it's not the
kind of money that should be touched.

Brain Games should either pick a program or pick Shredder. They should not hold
a qualifier in order to force Shredder to prove itself against other programs.
That has already been done. Bertil's claim in an earlier post that the result
of the WCCC was "luck" makes it very clear what is happening here. The result
of the WCCC is not being accepted, and there is an attempt being made here to
undo it.
