I always do this as follows. The engines I use are in the same
directory as WinBoard. Then in the startup dialog box,
I check the first radio button
"Play against a chess engine or match two engines"
and fill in, for example,
gnuchess
queen

in the boxes just below this button.
Then at the bottom, I check "Additional options" and
I enter, for example,
/mg 40 /sgf test.pgn

That should work.
