Thanks for your answers. I should have made it clear that I was _modelling_ a sequence of chess-games as a sequence of n Bernoulli trials with given probabilities. e.g. Ernst Heinz and others have done this in self-play experiments - being careful to switch off 'learning dimensions' of their programs. Agreed - the learning factor undermines the validity of the Bernoulli trial model but it has its uses if learning is not present. G
