Yep, happened to me too, just a couple months ago. I lost two Linux servers
(fried the power supplies). Fortunately they were under warranty and I got them
fixed. Fortunately, also, the drives were fine: no data lost. I had a third
machine on the same circuit (BSD firewall) but it didn't have any problems at
all.

Then I got an APC backup unit. The one I have has a serial port that can be used
to trigger the machines to shut down gracefully, so if the power's out and
you're not there, the machines won't run the battery down to zero power.
