A tragedy for Deep Junior in game 22! In an equal position, DJ turned down a draw offer from Deep Fritz on move 33 and went on to lose when it underestimated the passed pawns on the kingside. So instead of guaranteeing itself at least a playoff, Junior still needs a full point from the final two games to lock up the match. Programmers have always been worried about game strategy, but now it looks like these machines need a crash course in match strategy! Take the draw!! (And, if you need a win, don't offer a draw!) The result came from a typical "horizon" problem computer face when dealing with pawn endgames. Any decent human player could see that at some point, black would be able to create a dangerous outside passer. But here, Fritz figured that out first and did not mind giving up its bishop to win with its pawns. Junior did not see the danger until it was already too late. This is in my opinion why there should be operators present at these events, so these mishabs won't happen. Regards Jonas
