I think their performance rating depends on the opposition. As you say,
against strong humans playing their usual chess, they perform very well.
Against players like you they don't do nearly as well (rating wise).

I think a player with (say) a rating of 2200 who knows a program, can
easily get near 50% with draw seeking chess.
