i can certainly believe that CSTAL's notion of evaluation goes far
beyond what most (maybe any) chess program might include, perhaps
including complex dynamic aspects that might themselves look a lot
like highly specialized searches.

are you claiming that CSTAL does not use a minimax search layered
over its form of evaluation?
