Subject: Weird retro question -- a search for tools

Author: Dann Corbit

I am wondering about tools to tell me if a position is impossible or not. For
instance, this position looks impossible at first glance:
[D]r2qk2r/ppp2ppp/2n2n2/3pp3/1b4b1/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq -

But we can see from here, that it is perfectly legal:
[Event "Edited game"]
[Site "DANNFAST"]
[Date "2001.05.03"]
[Round "-"]
[White "-"]
[Black "-"]
[Result "*"]

1. Nf3 d5 2. Ng1 e5 3. Nf3 Bb4 4. Ng1 Bg4 5. Nf3 Nc6 6. Ng1 Nf6
*

So, my burning question is, are there any tools that will tell me if a position
is not valid (could not occur in a chess game)?

I know beforehand that the piece count will be legal (IOW, no cases with 9 pawns
or two same color kings or anything weird like that...)
