Maybe the Retractor program is useful for you. I'm not much "into" chess
problems and the like, but a far as I understood it, the Rectractor does a check
for several kinds of illegalities (probably more than a standard chess problem
solver, i.e. for cages):

It's is nice windows program. Imports Forsythe strings (Ctrl-Alt-P). Solving is
started with Ctrl-L. Probably the only chess program that plays backwards!
