I have a feeling that nano technology will reveal new ways in the development of real "HALs", also genetic engineering. I have no deeper knowledge in these fields, but imagination does well with small bits of information :) Your topic has reminded me of a story by Stanislav Lem, where two ingenious engineers, famous in the whole Universe, put themselves to the task of creating ever-happy beings (they wouldn't succed in the end, but still find out a lot by their experiments...) Later in the story one learned that these two were not human, nor was their long ago deceased mentor. Humans had very long before disappeared, leaving the place to their more evolved creations. A very funny story, as well as very clearly posing substantial questions about the "human condition". Actually, I don't know whether Stanislav Lem plays chess, but I presume that he does, being an educated polish citizen. In any case, at least I could bring up the subject of this forum for once :) Cheers, Gorgon
