In an unbelievable comeback, Deep Fritz completely dominated the second half of the match to erase a five-game deficit and force a playoff. Junior's casual attitude toward pawns and high regard for piece activity made it the aggressor in the majority of games and early on it looked like Deep Fritz had no idea how to handle this style. These programs are only supposed to "learn" in their opening books, so it is probably just a coincidence, but Fritz really seemed to settle down and play more solidly against DJ's gambit play in the second half of the match. A bitter, yet encouraging, defeat for the Junior team. Congratulations to the ChessBase team behind Fritz. Their program showed heart as well as brains!
