If the learning algorithm is the same for both programs then it can help the side with the bigger book in a long match If you have bigger book you have better chance to repeat again and again a line that your opponent does not understand after enough games and the opponent cannot change the line because the book is too small for it. Even if you do not repeat exactly the same line you may have problems from the fact that you have to repeat a lot of moves in the opening thanks for your small book so you get a line that is almost the same.
