I recently installed Linux on a spare computer, to run crafty from. I know very little about Linux. I was having a problem running crafty, and asked a friend what to do. (He isn't an expert, but knows more than me.) He told me to type (as root, from root) "chmod 777 * .* -R". I did. Now I can see that the groups are ALL messed up, and what's worse is, when I try to become root, login as root, su someone (su - soinso), or chmod, chown, chgrp, anything, I cannot. Says, "Unable to set group; operation is prohibited." In other words, I CANNOT LOGIN AS ROOT. My whole system is basically frozen as far as doing ANYTHING. I've talked to several people, and NO ONE can help. Please help! Slate
