Tell your friend he doesn't know what he is doing.  :)

several files are setuid root.  You removed that permission with your
777 chmod command.  It is _possible_ that linuxconf will be able to restore
the setuid programs to their right permissions.  It might take a re-ihstall
to make things right.

if nothing else, you now have no file security of any kind, which is not
smart..
