I get by with an even slower computer (Pentium 133, 16 MB RAM), so I can only
speculate on why one would want the fastest possible machine. Since any decent
program can beat the tar out of non-masters like myself even on a 66 Mhz
machine, I assume the reason for wanting a faster one is improved quality of
analysis. A machine that is capable of hitting 20+ ply in a reasonable amount
of time -- which I assume is not generally available yet -- could presumably
compensate for programs' well-known positional deficiencies simply through depth
of calculation.
