Someone might claim that winning is so unlikely that it's a free pledge.

That sounds like a likely scenario, but I haven't seen it on print anywhere.
OTOH who would the third party be? I doubt BGN gets a cut in case of a computer
loss.

Unknown. Maybe that amount of cash is deemed insufficient for a fund, but not a
bank account ;-).

That is my impression as well. Doing anything else than promised would surely be
somewhat risky given the publicity. Of course there are still numerous
conspiracy theories available concerning various cashflow options. I haven't see
any proof so far that substantiates such claims.

They do get a lot of virtually free publicity that would equal a generous amount
of cash if they had to do it themselves by advertizing. They wouldn't be able to
accomplish the same with $400,000 IMO. But what do I know about advertizing.
