If your only looking to ajust the style and perimiters of the program, I am a big fan of Chess Genius Gold. It has more chess options then Fritz5, and a better chess board interface. It also has the best 3d board that I know of. Genius 5 Gold, comes with all versions of the program so far designed too. Fritz5 has the virtule that you can add different engines designed for it, like HIARCS 6.0, Junior and others, and that the 'kippitzing' function is quite amuzing! It will even talk at you, if you insert the talk CD, and I hear they are working on different talk CD's as well. I'm not sure what you mean by gains, but if it is chess quizes that your thinking about, Fritz5 would likely be the best choice for that as well, as the program can automatically generate them from games in the database, and chess, if you can afford it, you will enjoy Fritz5 as your playing program, and Chess Base for windows as your data base. It might be best to wait until the end of the year, when Chess Base is likely to indroduce the next version of their program. You'll get more 'bang for the buck'. If you don't mind Dos, I recommend you download REBEL Decade from http://www.rebel.nl/edsoft.htm It plays great, has sophisticated features, and best of all it'S free! - Why is Ed Schröder giving away such a great program, when chess addicts like me will buy them? If you just want a chess teaching program, then I recommend you get the, 'Chess Mentor' program - http://www.chess.com/ mrslug - the inkompetent chess software addict!
