i have had the same experience, kurt.

since the new tiger engines were released i've played 2200+ (3 to 5 minute
blitz) games at ICC with them...

i will say this... as a rule, if i am trying to win games and get rating points
i play tiger 14.

most series i've played, tiger 14 vs. deep fritz, fritz can't handle tiger. i'm
talking 30 to 50 game series... i think i've won about 5 of those and lost 2
against fritzes on equal hardware... and by a narrow margin.

fritz is a dangerous opponant, but not as strong as tiger 14. another
observation i feel pretty confident making... gambit 2 doesn't beat fritz like
tiger 14 can.

on the flipside... when i want to enjoy watching the games unfold, and i don't
care about points, i play gambit 2. i always play gambit 2 against humans
because of the wild games that develop. (as a bonus, my own ICC rating has gone
up 150 points since i started watching these tigers dismantle their opponants...
sort of like osmosis i guess... not from practice, that's for sure!)

i do NOT mean to imply that gambit 2 is weak... no way... is it very strong,
will beat most other engines consistently, but i believe tiger 14 is stronger.

tiger 14's ICC rating, running on AMD 1.2 GHz, averages around 3000 ... and that
rating has been established against all comers -- i have no formula, and i do
not have a noplay list. there are a number of computers at ICC with ratings
significantly higher, all the way to 3400, but they do things differently...
they are very selective about who they match. they will only play opponants
with extremely high ratings, and they do things like noplay other machines that
beat them, etc. the highest ratings on ICC belong to the machines that only
play against humans at blitz time controls, obviously.

also... by far, my toughest opponants on ICC are all playing tiger 14. in fact,
if you go there and check what software most of the computers in the 2800-3200
range are playing, you'll find it's truly a "jungle" over there... most of them
are tigers... against them, only my faster hardware gives me an edge... you're
not going to find another engine that beats those guys consistently on equal
hardware.

not scientific observations, i understand that... but my 2 cents "from the
trenches." :)
