I could certainly do it myself, but not if I am also a participant as I don't like the potential conflict of interest. 4. I can possibly arrange for some current hardware for those needing it. IE we have contacts with folks inside Dell, Compaq, and others. 5. I don't see any way to handle any other sort of expenses without some sort of corporate sponsorship. It might be possible to get Compaq involved since I am working on something related with them anyway... but I doubt they will spring for $50,000 worth of travel. 6. We could easily provide internet access for participants with remote machines, as well as for outside contact. We might even convince a student to establish a web site to follow the event. I organized one ACM tournament, and was involved in the organization of several others. Organizing such an event doesn't seem to be particularly alarming to me. There are lots of details of course... IE perhaps getting a GM to attend for during-the-game analysis (Stuart Rachaels is from Birmingham and might do this, or I might convince Roman to do it). It is doable if there is reasonable interest.
