The latest such experiment, by Ernst A. Heinz found diminishing returns. There
are many factors that need to be considered in finding conclusive proof. One big
problem is that chess position evaluations are far from perfect (really way off
IMO), alas the same probem is more endemic in Go (Shogi has a comparable
branching factor, and Crazyhouse is not far after. But both of them have more
static features.). There is even the possibility of a tree being pathological,
i.e. more search will actually produce worse play.
