What is the basis for the statement that Fritz 5 used "extra RAM"?
Thoralf Karlsson's comments to the rating list only state that "Fritz 5
used at least 64 MB RAM". That doesn't imply or mean that other
programs used less RAM when being tested aganist Fritz 5. Perhaps Mr.
Karlsson can comment. Also, what is the basis
for the assumption that the use of the Powerbook increased Fritz's
strength? In general, use of a very broad opening book (like Powerbook)
degrades strength compared to the use of fine-tuned and
highly-selective "tournament" opening books. Perhaps Mr. Karlsson can
also comment on Fritz's performance with Powerbook as opposed to the
"ordinary" book.
In any
event, all(?) (at least most) of the top engines have multiple books,
and presumably used their strongest book for testing purposes. What's
wrong with Fritz doing the same? Moreover, if the other engines used
their strongest books all of the time, Fritz would have been at a
disadvantage because it used the Powerbook some of the time and the
"ordinary" book some of the time. Unless the Powerbook and the
"ordinary" book are of equal strength, this would hurt Fritz's
performance.
In spite of the large number of
postings to this site, I am still unable to identify the exact nature of
Fritz's alleged "unfair advantage".
