Subject: Chess Computer Strength

I've been reading the comments about the strength of Fritz5 in
comparison to other computers with great interest. My impression is
thatwhile Fritz5 is very strong tactically and positionally and can
defeat Rebel9 and Hiarcs6 in speed and rapid games, at tournament level
it is beaten regularly. All the programmed strengths count for little in
complicated middle games where even the slightest weaker moves
accumulate to a point where the programme finishes up with a lost
endgame.Admittedly Fritz5 does perform better in certain openings
(Sicilians,Grunfelds and even gambits)where tactical strength rather
than positional knowledge is important.Overall though I thnk that it is
absurd to suggest it is 61 ELO points stronger than the Rebel9.
My comments are in no way intended as a put down of Fritz5.I absolutely
love the programme. In fact it is my favourite. It must be said though
that it is not the best.
