Hardware constantly moves forward and we'll never keep up.
Some people have old machines and don't want to spend $1000 once per year.

I don't see any sort of problem with any sort of tournament on any sort of
hardware.

If someone wants to run Commodore 64 chess against Atari chess, then why not?
