IMO, Tony A. Marsland -- the current ICCA president and long time
computer chess expert -- wrote two of the best introductory articles:
1. "The anatomy of chess programs" available electronically at URL
<http://www.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/~icca/anatomy.htm> on the official
WWW page of the ICCA
2. "Computer chess and search."
In Encyclopedia of Artificial Intelligence (2nd ed.), 1992,
S.C.Shapiro (ed.), pp. 224-241, Wiley & Sons, ISBN 0-471-50305-3.
