Did you see Crafty's performance on CCT3? According to its creator, it had a
problem with its opening book. With a time-limit of 2 hours or less, computer
chess heavily relies on books.

comp. vs. comp without book is taking a great strength from computer chess. The
strength of accessing a huge amount of data within a relatively short time. To
test a search engine, .... yes, turning off books helps debugging the code.

A chess computer is the hardware, the algorithms, the "tricks", and the books.
