I believe you are correct regarding "a" and "b" being a tablebase bug fix.
The problem IMO is when these patches are available there is no official
word sent to registered owners (excluding the first patch "a".) There is
no txt file explaining the differences in the latest engine within the patch.

As far as chessbase seem concerned since everytime the engine is called Fritz
6.eng that is the only engine that exists.
