I think it was forced there almost, in order to avoid running into the 50-move
rule problem.  The problem in that game was that the rook was in front of the
pawn, which is already evaluated in Crafty.  However, the evaluation was
ineffective after some other tuning I had done.  That was fixed that same
night.

My above comment should have said "except for one case, everything looked
ok..."  :)  as reaching the position with the rook in front of the pawn ought
to be avoided if possible.
