Actually, you might be surprised how much I agree with you.  I think it would be
an interesting research project.  If someone else did it, I would enjoy going
over the data.

However, from my standpoint, I want chess excellence.  That is the reason for my
well-known distaste for blitz.  So running contests with castrated chess
programs which will produce comically bad moves is not something I would engage
in.  Yet I do recognize that valuable and interesting data would result.  It's
just not the sort of thing I would ever want to spend *my* time on.  If someone
else wants to do it, I say more power to them.

I do think you should get the program author's permission before doing something
like this.  I suspect many would find it very distateful, especially those who
spent hundreds or thousands of hours working on their books.
