See my earlier post. I was hoping Bob or Bruce would respond. My take on this is that the program must be able to see in the search some reason to make progress ie a position with a higher score than currently, or that 3 fold repetition will make the current position, if repeated, less attractive. If this theory is correct then you might consider checking that your repetition detection is working.
