Basically the dedicated chess computers market is dead. There is money to make
only on very cheap, small, dedicated chess computers, so don't expect an elo
above 1700 from these.

This market is dead because a PC is cheap enough and fast enough that there is
no point in commercializing a dedicated computer that will be as expensive, not
stronger and not evolutive. Some people will buy it, but not enough people to
make enough money from it.

The market is dead a second time since you can find handheld computers with good
chess programs on them (mainly PalmOS compatible computers).

So yes, standalone chess computers are going in the down direction from a
strength point of view.
